More than a dozen safety-net hospitals across New York state are set to receive $51 million in grants from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in New York City.

The foundation announced the funding in a May 14 LinkedIn post, writing: “We have worked long and hard with hospitals, the American Nurses Association and our programs team to ensure 13 New York hospitals can bolster and sustain their workforce and patient care over the next few years.”

In a news release shared with Becker’s, the foundation said the new “Nursing Initiative” grant program will support more than 6,500 nurses statewide and help 13 hospitals “achieve industry-leading frameworks in nursing excellence, establish innovative programs to support front-line nurses and help recent nurse graduates transition into the profession.”

Each hospital will receive $1 million to $5 million over five years to pursue accreditation through the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program or Pathway to Excellence designation.

Grant recipients, which were selected from among more than 50 applicants, include:

  • Auburn Community Hospital
  • Calvary Hospital (Bronx)
  • Mercy Hospital, Catholic Health System of Long Island (Rockville Centre)
  • University of Vermont Health Network–Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (Plattsburgh)
  • Columbia Memorial Health (Hudson)
  • Montefiore Medical Center (Bronx)
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital (Binghamton)
  • Rome Memorial Hospital
  • Samaritan Hospital and the Eddy Foundation (Albany)
  • St. Mary’s Healthcare (Amsterdam)
  • St. Barnabas Hospital (Bronx)
  • St. John’s Riverside Hospital (Yonkers)
  • United Health Services Hospitals (Binghamton)

“From Binghamton to the Bronx, New York nurses are the backbone of patient care, demonstrating dedication and resilience. Our nursing initiative is designed to provide the resources needed to ensure they can thrive and deliver the highest quality of care,” Monsignor Gregory Mustaciuolo, CEO of Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, said in the release. “By supporting nurses, we are investing in better patient care and outcomes.”

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation developed the Nursing Initiative in response to findings from a report by the Albany, N.Y.-based Center for Health Workforce Studies. The report found that while the vast majority of study participants reported that RN recruitment had slowly improved, retention remains a challenge.
