About 52% of workers report struggling with loneliness, which can impact company operations, a Cigna Group report found.
The “Loneliness in America 2025” report used data from two online surveys between May 29 and June 14, 2024, through Evernorth Research Institute in collaboration with YouGov and Morning Consult. The survey collected data from about 7,500 adults 18 and older.
Here are four more findings:
1. Generation Z reported the highest levels of loneliness at 67%, compared to millennials at 65%, Geneneration X at 60% and baby boomers at 44%.
2. Workers who are lonely are more likely to miss work or seek new roles, and are less likely to accomplish their work goals. They are also more likely to disengage from work, which can affect team cohesion and overall company performance.
3. There were higher rates of loneliness among parents of younger children and unpaid caregivers to older family members or someone with a disability.
4. Workers who are not lonely are significantly more likely to say they are willing to work harder to help their company succeed (74% versus 63% lonely).
